About the Conference

Interconnected Risks and Responses

Protecting health in conflict settings demands resilient systems, collaboration, and science-driven action

The International Conference on Infectious Diseases in Conflict Settings, hosted by Birzeit University, will gather researchers, policymakers, humanitarian practitioners, and public health professionals to examine infectious disease risks in conflict-affected and humanitarian environments.

The conference will feature scientific sessions addressing disease surveillance and early warning, outbreak preparedness and infection prevention, vaccination strategies, antimicrobial resistance, environmental and zoonotic disease drivers, and health risks affecting displaced and vulnerable populations.

This conference serves a dual purpose:

1. To advance global dialogue and scientific collaboration on infectious diseases and One Health in humanitarian and conflict settings.

2. To catalyze transdisciplinary partnerships that translate research into policy, preparedness, and action in fragile contexts.

Conference Vision & Mission

  • Conference Vision: To position Birzeit University as a regional and global platform advancing equitable and resilient responses to infectious diseases in conflict and displacement settings.
  • Global Dialogue: Bringing together experts, policymakers, humanitarian actors, researchers, and innovators to exchange knowledge and strengthen coordinated responses.
  • Knowledge to Action: Translating lessons from humanitarian crises into practical and scalable strategies that improve preparedness and health system resilience.
  • Strengthening Systems: Promoting surveillance, preparedness, vaccination, AMR control, and community resilience.
  • Exclusive event for 150–300 key stakeholders
  • 26–27 October 2026 · hybrid event (onsite and online)
  • Nasseb Azeez Shaheen Auditorium, Birzeit University

Day 1 Closing Summary with Recommendations (Prof. Susu Zughaier & Prof. Niveen Abu-Rmeileh)The main outputs from Sessions 1 and 2, priority recommendations and what will happen on Day 2.

Programme concept

The conference is organised as four themed, Davos-style scientific sessions across two days. Each main scientific programme is followed by a moment of remembrance, a coffee break and side-event activities comprising five flash talks and a topic-matched poster session. Each day closes with a summary of outputs, recommendations and next steps.

Opening keynotes
20 minutes

Frames the session and sets a clear question for the round table.

Selected oral abstracts
5 × 10 minutes

Highest-ranked topic-matched abstracts selected by the Scientific Committee.

Remarks
10 minutes

Synthesises the evidence and offers a final provocation before the roundtable discussion.

Davos-style round table
25 minutes

Moderated exchange among speakers and the audience; Q&A is concentrated here rather than after individual talks.

Moment of remembrance
5 minutes

A brief, general acknowledgement of health workers affected by humanitarian crises, held before the coffee break.

Coffee break
15 minutes

Transition from the main programme to the parallel sessions.

Flash talks
5 × 5 minutes

Abstracts ranked immediately below the full oral threshold, selected for short-format delivery.

Posters
30 minutes

Digital posters on the same scientific theme as the preceding oral session.

Closing summary
20–45 minutes

At the end of each day, consolidate outputs, recommendations and next steps.

Davos-style moderation protocol

Before the session

The session chairs agree one central question with the opening keynote and remarks speakers and review all oral titles.

During the talks

Chairs keep strictly to time (10 min per oral, 5 min per flash talk), signal 2 minutes before the end, and record cross-cutting findings for the round table. No individual Q&A after talks.

Round-table panel

The opening keynote speaker, remarks speaker and the selected oral presenters join the moderator.

Audience exchange

The session remarks speaker clusters questions, invites short responses and protects the full 25-minute discussion.

Parallel events

After the round table, a 5-minute moment of remembrance and a 15-minute coffee break are followed by five flash talks (25 minutes) and a topic-matched poster session (30 minutes).

Daily output

Session chairs close each day with a concise synthesis, recommendations and agreed next steps.

Flash-talk standardFive minutes, no more than three content slides, one principal finding and one clear implication.

Recommendations

Prioritised recommendations for research, policy, clinical practice, preparedness and humanitarian action.

Next steps

Named follow-up actions, responsible groups and an indicative timetable for continuing the work.

Dissemination

A post-conference summary to be shared with participants, partners and relevant decision-makers.
